Difference between a Prophet, a Sahabi and an Imam

Difference between a Prophet, a Sahabi and an Imam?

Verily all praise is for Allah, we praise Him and seek His aid and ask for His forgiveness and we seek refuge with Allah from the evils of ourselves and our evil actions. Whomsoever Allah (SWT) guides, none can lead him astray, and whomsoever Allah sends astray, none can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.
(this is how Prophet SAW used to start his speech Nisai 3278, Nisai 1578)

My Lord, open up my heart [with assurance] And ease for me my task And untie the knot from my tongue That they may understand my speech.[20:25-28] Ameen

The one personality with whom every single Muslim agrees with is our last Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.W. After him there is a major divide in the Ummah, Ahle Sunnah and Ahle Tasheeh. Ahle Sunnah believes that after Prophet S.A.W.W the one's who took the mission of the Allah bestowed upon Prophet further are the Khulafas namely Abu Bakr Siddique, Umar Farooq, Usman e Ghani, Mawla Ali and Imam Hasan ibn Ali R.A A.S.

Narrated Safinah:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The Caliphate of Prophecy will last thirty years; then Allah will give the Kingdom of His Kingdom to anyone He wills.

Sa'id told that Safinah said to him: Calculate Abu Bakr's caliphate as two years, 'Umar's as ten, 'Uthman's as twelve and 'Ali so and so. Sa'id said: I said to Safinah: They conceive that 'Ali was not a caliph. He replied: The buttocks of Marwan told a lie.

[Abu Dawud 4646] (those who wish to know further details can read the hadith of Musanaf ibn abi Shaybah 37157.

Ahle Tashee says that Ali R.A should have been the first rightful Caliph, they think that the Ahle Bait of Prophet are the rightful heirs of Khilafah that's the only difference.

Difference between a Prophet and a normal human

Why do Muslims unanimously believe in the Prophet S.A.W.W? The first and utmost reason is that it is a part of our faith without it a person is no longer Muslim. Prophet is a person who is constantly under Allah's supervision, guidance and he is protected by Allah from committing any sins but he may in some cases make decisions that are not right in the sight of Allah which He then rectifies it by sending the revelation (they are not sins). Some of these cases briefly are (Some people may call it Blasphemy, NO! it is not, it shows that the author of this Book (Quran) is Allah and it shows the difference of a Prophet and a Creator.):

  • Prophet S.A.W.W on one occasion said that he won't eat honey anymore, Allah corrected him، in Surah Tehreem.
    • O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [Surah Tehreem 66:1]
  • Once Prophet was giving dawaah to the leaders of the Makkah and a blind Companion of Prophet came and asked something, on which he felt uneasy.
    • The Prophet frowned and turned away (1) Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. (2) But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified (3) [Surah Abasa 80:1-3]
  • The captives of Battle Badr were released by taking some penalty money. Allah said that was not the right decision, in Surah Anfal
    • It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah 's enemies] in the land. Some Muslims desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. [Surah Anfal 8:67]
  • Prophet S.A.W.W prayed the funeral of his biggest enemy, the person who had done blasphemy countless times, the leader of Munafiqeen Abdullah ibn Ubai and after that Allah said you shouldn't have done that
    • And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muhammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient. [Surah Tawba 9:85]
What I need to highlight is that every human being can make wrong decisions or commit a mistake (not talking about sin), the difference between a Prophet and a normal person is that the Prophet is under divine protection and guidance. On the contrary, the normal person, if he makes a wrong decision. He won't be corrected by the divine authority, that is Allah, so we cannot follow a normal person blindly the way we follow the Prophet. The only personality which can be followed blindly are Prophets.

Did Sahaba also make wrong decisions?

After Prophet the most respected personalities are the rightful caliphs. So, what do you think, when Prophet can make wrong decision (which we call ijtihaadi khata in urdu), as discussed above, can Companions of Prophet be any different, as they are not even in direct contact with Allah in form of revelation. Umar R.A said

Narrated `Umar bin Al-Khattab:

People were (sometimes) judged by the revealing of a Divine Inspiration during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle but now there is no longer any more (new revelation). Now we judge you by the deeds you practice publicly, so we will trust and favor the one who does good deeds in front of us, and we will not call him to account about what he is really doing in secret, for Allah will judge him for that; but we will not trust or believe the one who presents to us with an evil deed even if he claims that his intentions were good. [Bukhari 2641]

Anas reported that after the death of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) Abu Bakr said to 'Umar:

Let us visit Umm Aiman as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to visit her. As we came to her, she wept. They (Abu Bakr and Umar) said to her: What makes you weep? What is in store (in the next world) for Allah's-Messenger (ﷺ) is better than (this worldly life). She said: I weep not because I am ignorant of the fact that what is in store for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (in the next world) is better than (this world), but I weep because the revelation which came from the Heaven has ceased to come. This moved both of them to tears and they began to weep along with her.

Muslim 6318/2454

Let's look at some of the wrong decisions that the Caliphs made and Sahaba spoke against it.
  • Umar R.A forbade people from doing Hajj e Tamatoh on which, Ibn Abbas R.A rebuttled (Musnad Ahmad 3121), Abu Musa Ashari R.A (Muslim 2961/1222) and Ibn Umar R.A said
    • Salim bin Abdullah narrated that :
he had heard a man from Ash-Sham asking Abdullah bin Umar about Tamattu after Umrah until Hajj, so Abdullah bin Umar said: "It is lawful." The man from Ash-Sham said: "But your father prohibited it." So Abdullah bin Umar said: "Is the order to follow my father or is the order (to follow) for the Messenger of Allah?" The man said: "Rather it is for the Messenger of Allah." So he said: "Indeed the Messenger of Allah did it." [Jami Tirmidhi 824]
  • Usman e Ghani R.A A.S also forbade people to do Hajj e Tamatoh and Mawla Ali R.A A.S rebuted
    • Sa'id b. al-Musayyab reported that 'Ali and 'Uthman (Allah be pleased with them) met at 'Usfan; and Uthman used to forbid (people) from performing Tamattu' and 'Umra (during the period of Hajj), whereupon 'Ali said:

What is your opinion about a matter which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did but you forbid it? Thereupon Uthman said: You leave us alone, whereupon he ('Ali) said: I cannot leave you alone. When 'Ali saw this, he put on Ihram for both of them together (both for Hajj and 'Umra). [Sahih Muslim 1223 2694] [Sahih Bukhari 1569]

  • Ali R.A burned some of the people who left Islam on which Ibn Abbas R.A said, only Allah can punish someone by burning them in fire
    • It was narrated from 'Ikrimah:
"Some people apostatized after accepting Islam, and 'Ali burned them with fire. Ibn 'Abbas said: 'If it had been me, I would not have burned them; the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'No one should be punished with the punishment of Allah.' If it had been me, I would have killed them; the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Whoever changes his religion, kill him.'" [Sunan Nasai 4060] [Musnad Ahmad 6642]
  • Prophet sent a small group and appointed one Sahabi as their leader, on one issue that leader became angry and said to his fellow Sahaba who were his subordinates to jump into the fire, and he said that Prophet said to obey the leader but they didn't jump, when this was reported to Prophet, he said if you had jumped into it you would have gone into the hell fire, obey only in good matters.
    • Narrated `Ali:

The Prophet (ﷺ) sent an army unit (for some campaign) and appointed a man from the Ansar as its commander and ordered them (the soldiers) to obey him. (During the campaign) he became angry with them and said, "Didn't the Prophet (ﷺ) order you to obey me?" They said, "Yes." He said, "I order you to collect wood and make a fire and then throw yourselves into it." So they collected wood and made a fire, but when they were about to throw themselves into, it they started looking at each other, and some of them said, "We followed the Prophet (ﷺ) to escape from the fire. How should we enter it now?" So while they were in that state, the fire extinguished and their commander's anger abated. The event was mentioned to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said, "If they had entered it (the fire) they would never have come out of it, for obedience is required only in what is good." [Bukhari 7145]

So after all this discussion we know, one did not even follow the Caliphs blindly, so how can we follow a particular Imam blindly?! If on this, one say he is such a big Imam/Alim/Mufti how can he be wrong? my question for that person is, Is he better than a Sahabi?.. Follow only Quran and Sunnah. Whatever they teach, it should be from Quran and Sunnah otherwise don't follow it.

As most of the people of subcontinent are Hanafi (Deobandi, Brailvi). So a few mistakes of Imam Abu Haneefa R.Alai or Fiqah Hanfi, fatwas which are against Quran and Sunnah. One thing to keep in mind is Imam Abu Haneefa R.Alai is the most infamous Imam as most of Fiqah e Hanfi are not the Fatwas of Imam Abu Haneefa R.Alai may Allah be pleased with him. They are the fatwas of his student who accepted the offer of the Abbasid caliph and became a Qazi. This offer was actually made to Imam Abu Haneefa but he declined. He was then imprisoned and poisioned.

Few Fatwas of Fiqah Hanfi that are against Quran and Sunnah, this doesn't mean we degrade or ridicule Imam Abu Haneefa R.Alai, as this is one of the early Fiqhs, even before the Ahadith were gathered, compiled and cleansed. He may not have received the Ahadith on some of the topics for which his fatwas contradict the Ahadtih. As we know he has said that
"if you find any of my fatwas against Ahadith then follow Hadith".[Book: Huja tul lahil Baliga. Author: Shah wali ullah dehalvi R.Alai]

Few fatwas as an example:
  • Maximum period of breast-feeding according to Imam Abu Haneefa is 30 months (2 years and 6 months)
    • According to Quran it is 2 years
      • Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period].....[Surah Baqarah 2:233]
  • Imam Abu Haneefa R.Alai said that a salah for rain is not sunnah.[in al Hidayah] [in detail of Tirmidhi 559 it is also available on Islam 360]
    • Abbad bin Tamim narrated from his uncle:
"The Messenger of Allah went out with the people to seek rain. So he led them in prayer for two Rak'ah, reciting aloud in them, turning his upper wrap around, raising his hands, requesting rain, and facing the Qiblah."[Tirmidhi 556]
  • There is a chapter in Musanaf ibn Abi Shaibah from hadith 37201-37687 which are all the fatwas of Imam Abu Haneefa which are against Ahadith.
Then there are some fatwas of Imam Abu Haneefa A.S which even Fiqah Hanfi don't follow, like according to Imam, Khatam e Quran (after death of a person reading Quran on him and depositing the good deeds for him) is a bida'ah.

As for Imam Shaafi A.S, he was of the view that if one touches a women his wudu is no more but it is also against the Sunnah as it is reported

Narrated `Aisha:

the wife of the Prophet, "I used to sleep in front of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) with my legs opposite his Qibla (facing him); and whenever he prostrated, he pushed my feet and I withdrew them and whenever he stood, I stretched them." `Aisha added, "In those days there were no lamps in the houses." [Sahih Bukhari 513] [Mishkat 786]

I think that conveys the message.

The most common question Muslims are usually asked is, which Imam do you follow? or which sect do you follow? I think after all this discussion you should feel proud to only call yourselves Muslims. Follow Quran and Sunnah, ask the Imams/Alims/Muftis the fatwas they are giving, where it is written in Quran or Sunnah.

....مِّلَّةَ أَبِيكُمْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ هُوَ سَمَّاكُمُ الْمُسْلِمينَ مِن قَبْلُ وَفِي هَذَا....
....[It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. Allah named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation].... (Hajj 22:78)

Don't divide yourself into sects follow Quran and Sunnah.

O Allah! Enable us to see the Truth as Truth and give us the ability to follow it. And show us the falsehood as false and give us the ability to refrain from it. Ameen
