Fraud in the name of Waseela

Waseela and Tawasul

Fraud in the name of Waseela

Praise be to Allah, we seek His help. Whomsoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah (alone with no partners) and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. To proceed
(this is how Prophet SAW used to start his speech Nisai 3278Nisai 1578)

My Lord, open up my heart [with assurance] And ease for me my task And untie the knot from my tongue That they may understand my speech.[20:25-28] Ameen

O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad (Nasai 1292)

Waseela and Tawassul, the words which has different meaning in Quran and different among the Muslims of subcontinent. Let's dive into it, first let's see what it means and find out what are the types of Waseela which can be used according to Quran and Sahih Ahadith.

Meaning of Waseela

Waseela in general means a medium to reach a desired goal. In Islamic terminology it means a medium which someone gives to Allah for the acceptance of prayer, a means to attain Allah's happiness.

O People who Believe! Fear Allah, and seek the means towards Him, and strive in His cause, in the hope of attaining success. (Maidah 5:35)
Now as Allah has mentioned Waseela, He and His Messenger would have taught us which waseela's to take.

In subcontinent waseela means, that one cannot get to or call upon Allah directly. He should add a means (a service provider like Jazz, Ufone) which is a saint and that saint will connect you to Allah, you cannot connect directly. They give an example that to reach a roof you need stairs, okay.... BUT Allah himself says in Quran

.... nothing is like Him .... [Shoora 42:11]

And if My servants ask you, O Prophet. concerning Me, tell them that I am quite near to them. I hear and answer the prayer of the suppliant, when he calls to Me. So let them respond to My call and believe in Me. Convey this to them, O Prophet; perhaps they may be guided aright. [Baqarah 2:186]

And your Lord said: "Call upon Me, I will answer you. Verily, those who scorn My worship they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!" [Momin/ Ghaafir 40:60]
Allah didn't say that call my this saint franchise and they will forward your call to me 😅, He said to directly CALL HIM. If someone says that Allah don't listen to my prayers, then he is slandering Him.

In subcontinent/ Tasawuff they say there are three stages,
  1. Fanaa fi shiekh
  2. Fanaa fi rasool
  3. Fanaa fi Allah
And their whole life they stay at Fanaa fi shiekh level, pleasing the saint giving them money alms, charity. They can't produce someone who is at level Fanaa fi Allah, that at some point in life that man would say ya shiekh now move aside I want to connect directly to Allah🙄. I would say all this is bogus and a waseela (😅) to earn money and keep people far from Quran and Ahadith otherwise their empires would fall apart, and no one will give them charity.

The above two verses negate this ideology related to Waseela. Allah says in Quran that He is close to you and He listens to you. You don't need any medium to reach Allah and He says

People of the Book! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, and attribute to Allah nothing except the truth.... [Nisaa 4:171]

Those who falsely fix lies upon Allah despite this are the wrong-doers. [Aal e Imran 3:94]

And do not utter falsehoods by letting your tongues declare: "This is lawful" and "That is unlawful," thus fabricating lies against Allah. Surely those who fabricate lies against Allah will never prosper. [Nahl 16:116]

There are almost five types of Waseela which are allowed according to Quran and Sahih Ahadith. Let's recall the meaning of Waseela, a medium which someone gives to Allah for the acceptance of prayer. Let me explain it with an example a difference between Halal waseela and Haram waseela.

Halal Waseela:

If someone says, Ya Allah I give you waseela of your righteous slave that Ya Allah please solve my problem.

There is nothing wrong with it, as you are asking Allah and it is not in violation of Surah Fatiha's verse 5

You alone do we worship, and You alone do we turn for help

One thing which should be clear here is that this person whose Waseela I am giving, it is just a formality Allah is the one who can resolve my problem. Tawakull should be in Allah and not that Waseela.

Haram Waseela:

If someone calls a deceased person, Ya Ali help me or Ya Rasool Allah help me or Ya Ghous Pak help me,

First of all, this is not waseela, you are calling these personalities directly for help. If you ask someone what is this? they say that what happens is these dead personalities, ask Allah and then Allah gives them power and they then complete their jobs and resolve our issues 🤔🙄🤷‍♂️. So, what if I ask this, for rain Allah has appointed angels, then why don't you ask angels for rain? why do you ask Allah directly🙄. Who taught you this, is this in Quran or Ahadith, did Sahaba, Tabieen, Taba Tabieen do this?

What does Allah say about those whom you call for help other than Him.
Tell them: "Call upon those whom you fancy to be (your helpers) instead of Him! They have no power to remove any affliction from you, nor can they shift it (to any other)." [Israa 17:56]
One may say that these verses are for idols, let's look at the very next verse.
Those whom they call upon are themselves seeking the means of access to their Lord, each trying to be nearer to Him. They crave for His Mercy and dread His chastisement. Surely your Lord's punishment is to be feared. [Israa 17:57]

Idols are non-living being, so these verses are in general for whoso ever you call for help other than Allah.

Remember that devotion is exclusively for Allah. Those who have taken protectors other than Him, say: "We worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah." Surely Allah will judge between them in what they are differing about. Verily Allah does not show the way to an ungrateful liar. [Zumar 39:3]

Who hears the cry of the anguished (soul) when it calls to Him, and relieves its suffering? And who made you trustees on the earth? Is there any other god along with Allah? How little it is that you reflect! [Naml 27:62]

Who is more astray than he who calls on those, apart from Allah, who cannot answer their prayers till the Day of Resurrection, and are even unaware of being called.(5) When all men are gathered together (on that Day) they will become their enemies and deny their worship. (6) [Ahqaf 46:5-6]

The Christ, son of Mary, was but an apostle, and many apostles had (come and) gone before him; and his mother was a woman of truth. They both ate the (same) food (as men). Behold, how We show men clear signs, and behold, how they wander astray! (75) Tell them: "Leaving God aside, will you worship something that has no power over your loss or gain?" But God is all-hearing and all-knowing. (76) [Maida 5:75-76]

 Types of Waseela:

As I said earlier there are five types of Waseela which are found in Quran & Sahih Ahadith.

1) Waseela of His 99 names:

To ask Allah using his 99 names, in other words to give waseela of His 99 names.
Allah has the most excellent names. So, call on Him by His names.... [Aaraf 7:180]

For example:

Aban bin `Uthman said:

“I heard `Uthman bin `Affan (ra) saying: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There is no worshiper who says, in the morning of every day, and the evening of every night:

‘In the Name of Allah, who with His Name, nothing in the earth or the heavens can cause harm, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing (Bismillāh, alladhi lā yaḍurru ma`a ismihi shai'un fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā', wa huwas-Samī`ul `Alīm)’ – three times, (except that) nothing shall harm him.”

And Aban had been stricken with a type of semi-paralysis, so a man began to look at him, so Aban said to him, “What are you looking at? Indeed the Hadith is as I reported it to you, but I did not say it one day, so Allah brought about His decree upon me.” [Tirmidhi 3388]

2) Waseela of your good deeds:

And seek help in patience and prayer; and truly it is hard except for those who prostrate before Me with sincerity. [Baqarah 2:45]

O People who Believe! Seek help from patience and prayer; indeed Allah is with those who patiently endure. [Baqarah 2:153]

We used to read story of 3 people who got stuck in a cave and then they asked Allah for help by mentioning their good deeds. The whole story is in a hadith of Bukhari 2215

3) Waseela, a position in Jannah:

It is a position/ rank in Jannah. The Prophet S.A.W said

'Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession.  [Muslim 849/384]

 The dua after Adhaan,

(Allahumma, rabba hadhihidda 'watit-tammati was Salatilqa'imah, ati Muhammadanil wasilata wal-Fadilata, wab'athhu Maqamun Mahmudan alladhi wa'adtahu)

'O Allah! Lord of this perfect call and established prayer, grant Muhammad Al-Wasilah and Al-Fadilah, and raise him to the praised station that you promised him' - then intercession on the Day of Resurrection is made lawful for him." [Tirmidhi 211]

 4) Waseela of the items of Prophet S.A.W:

When people used to get sick, umm ul momineen used to dip the items of Prophet S.A.W in water and that water was used as a medicine.

Abdullah. the freed slave of Asma' (the daughter of Abu Bakr). the maternal uncle of the son of 'Ata, reported:

....I went back to Asma' and informed her. whereupon she said: Here is the cloak of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). and she brought out to me that cloak made of Persian cloth with a hem of brocade, and its sleeves bordered with brocade and said: This wall Allah's Messenger's cloak with 'A'isha until she died, and when she died. I got possession of it. The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) used to wear that, and we waslied it for the sick and sought cure thereby. [Muslim 5409/2069]

 Narrated IsraiI:

`Uthman bin `Abdullah bin Mauhab said, "My people sent me with a bowl of water to Um Salama." Isra'il approximated three fingers ('indicating the small size of the container in which there was some hair of the Prophet. `Uthman added, "If any person suffered from evil eye or some other disease, he would send a vessel (containing water) to Um Salama. I looked into the container (that held the hair of the Prophet) and saw a few red hairs in it," [Bukhari 5896]

I would recommend not to use this these days, as we don't know which of them are real and which are fake.

 5) Waseela of the pious living human:

Narrated Anas:

Whenever drought threatened them, `Umar bin Al-Khattab, used to ask Al-Abbas bin `Abdul Muttalib to invoke Allah for rain. He used to say, "O Allah! We used to ask our Prophet to invoke You for rain, and You would bless us with rain, and now we ask his uncle to invoke You for rain. O Allah ! Bless us with rain."(1) And so it would rain. [Bukhari 1010]

Umar bin Khattab R.A, the second Caliph, gave us a belief that after the death of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W, the Sahaba didn't used to call him for help or used his waseela in dua. They used the waseela of a man who was alive. On the other hand, if someone do use the waseela of Prophet (I am taking about waseela, not calling him directly) these days we don't say anything, because when the Prophet was alive. A Sahabi came to him and he told that man a dua. In Sunan Dar qutni there is a hadith which Imam Dar Qutni himself grade it as Sahih in it one Sahabi/Tabii goes to the court of Usman R.a in his era but due to the busy schedule he is not attended and the same Sahabi tells this man the dua which is mentioned below, so that's why I would say that if someone asks using waseela of Prophet S.A.W we don't say anything but it is better not to do it as Khulafa didn't Wallahu Alam.

It was narrated from ‘Uthman bin Hunaif that a blind man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said:

“Pray to Allah to heal me.” He said: “If you wish to store your reward for the Hereafter, that is better, or if you wish, I will supplicate for you.” He said: “Supplicate.” So he told him to perform ablution and do it well, and to pray two Rak’ah, and to say this supplication:

“Allahumma inni as’aluka wa atawajjahu ilaika bimuhammadin nabiyyir-rahmah. Ya Muhammadu inni qad tawajjahtu bika ila rabbi fi hajati hadhihi lituqda. Allahumma fashaffi’hu fiya

(O Allah, I ask of You and I turn my face towards You by virtue of the intercession of Muhammad the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad, I have turned to my Lord by virtue of your intercession concerning this need of mine so that it may be met. O Allah, accept his intercession concerning me)”. [Ibn Majah 1385]

These are the five types of Waseela which one can use in his dua. Some people out of anger say that then why do you ask your mother for bread, why don't you ask Allah. Ya akhi, you are not asking your dead mother, you are asking your mother who is right in front of you.

...help one another in righteousness and piety – and do not help one another in sin and injustice.... [Maida 5:2]

Remember, you can ask someone for help if he is

  • Haazir: he is present at that location.
  • Hayee: he is alive.
  • He has the power to do that task.

Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You Tirmidhi 3433

O Allah! Enable us to see the Truth as Truth and give us the ability to follow it. And show us the falsehood as false and give us the ability to refrain from it. Ameen
