Some important facts regarding Milad un Nabi

Praise be to Allah, we seek His help. Whomsoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah (alone with no partners) and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. To proceed
(this is how Prophet SAW used to start his speech Nisai 3278Nisai 1578)

My Lord, open up my heart [with assurance] And ease for me my task And untie the knot from my tongue That they may understand my speech.[20:25-28] Ameen

O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad (Nasai 1292)

Milad un-Nabi ﷺ, the birthday of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, there is a consensus in the date of birth, which is 12th of Rabi ul Awwal, between Ahle Sunnah and Ahle Tashee. Let's look at some of the evidence provided in the Books of both Ahle Sunnah and Ahle Tashee regarding the date of birth of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Note: First thing first, one should keep in mind the era in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born. People of that era were not accustomed on noting the dates, they used to remember it based on some big event that happened. For example, they would say and even these days people say that this boy was born/died in the same year the flood came or a year before that or after that. So sometimes you won't find in Ahadith the date of an event.

Date of Milad un Nabi

It is found in our text that Prophet was born the same year in which Abraha tried to attack Kabbah with elephants, Aam ul feel, the story which is also found in Quran in Surah Al Feel.

Narrated Al-Muttalib bin 'Abdullah bin Qais bin Makhramah:

from his father, from his grandfather, that he said: "I and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), were born in the Year of the Elephant" - he said: "And 'Uthman bin 'Affan asked Qubath bin Ashyam, the brother of Banu Ya'mar bin Laith - 'Are you greater (in age) or the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?'" He said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is greater than me, but I have an earlier birthday." He said: "And I saw the defecation of the birds turning green."

This hadith is also evidence that Prophet ﷺ was born in the year of elephant. Other than this we don't find any Hadith which narrates the date or month of his birthday BUT Imam Bayhaqi (Died 1066 A.D) wrote a book Dalail un Nabowa (Evidence of Prophet hood) in it he compiled all the Ahadith that Muhammad ﷺ prophesized and those events came to be after his death, or which proves that he was a Prophet of Allah. In it he mentioned a narration which says that Prophet ﷺ was born on Monday, 12th of Rabi ul Awwal. The text is in Urdu.

Dalail un Nabowa Vol 1 Page 156, Milad un Nabi date
Dalail un Nabowa Vol 1 Page 156, Date of birth

Although the chain of this narration is broken but this is the closest evidence we have on the date of birth, even the earlier history books point to this date.

Even the books of Ahle Tashee, Usool ul Kafi which holds the same place as Sahih Bukhari do for Ahle Sunnah. There it is also mentioned that the date of birth is 12th Rabi ul Awwal but the day mentioned is incorrect.

Usool ul Kafi ch 110, SHia Milad un Nabi,
Usool ul Kafi ch 110

So, there is consensus in Ummah according to the books of both Ahle Sunnah and Ahle Tashee on the date of birth.

One funny point here, our brailvi brothers celebrate Milad with great zeal on 12th of Rabi ul Awwal. The Imam of Brailvis, Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Brailvi (died in 1921 A.D), in his book Fatawa e Rizwi mentioned that the date of birth of Prophet was 8th of Rabi ul Awwal 😮

Fatawa rizvi vol 26 page 412, Date of birth of Prophet
Fatawa rizvi vol 26 page 412, Ahmad Raza Khan, Date of birth of Prophet

One other great saint Abdul Qadir Jilani R.Alai (died in
1166 A.D), people claims that his foot is on all of Wali ul Allah, which means that he is above all the Walis (people claim this, let's think positive that he didn't give such an arrogant statement), people also say that he knows the knowledge of unseen, ilm e gaib etc (Naozobillah). He in his book Gunia tut Talibeen, wrote the date of birth of Prophet, 10th of Moharram 🤯 (where was his ilm e gaib, the whole ummah has consensus on 12th Rabi ul awwal and Imam Bayhaqi came before him but Abdul Qadir Jilani still didn't know that the date of birth was 12th Rabi ul Awwal)

Gunia tut Talibeen page 448, Abdul Qadir Jilani, Date of Birth of Prophet
Gunia tut Talibeen page 448, Abdul Qadir Jilani, Date of Birth of Prophet

No disrespect meant for these saints, the point I am trying to highlight is follow Quran and Sunnah not these books which may have been altered.

How to celebrate it

Procession and rallies

Abu Qatada Ansari (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Massenger (ﷺ) was asked about fasting on Monday, whereupon he said:

It is (the day) when I was born and revelation was sent down to me.

The prophet ﷺ used to celebrate his birthday not every year, not every month but every week and the sunnah way of celebrating it is by fasting on Monday like the Prophet did. He didn't specify that one should fast on 12th of Rabi ul awwal rather every week on Monday. It is okay if in this month people discuss more about Seerah of Prophet that's okay but taking out procession, rallies and blocking out roads that is unnecessary and due to these acts, people suffer. People who are sick or in need of emergency medical attention can't reach clinics or hospitals. One of my relative, her dialysis was delayed due to this, one of my friend's brother was shot by a stray bullet in this procession and he died on spot and my friend was injured.

If all this according to you is okay, then please tell us that the 4th caliph Mawla Ali A.S R.A spent his last years in Kufa, if any Ahadith were missing he would have known it by then. Please tell us how many Mehfils of Milad took place in his era or any other caliph and they were the chief of guest of those Mehfils, from which point of Kufa were the processions or rallies used to start, who used to carry the banner in those rallies?! 🧐 Are you smarter than Companions of Prophet? Or do you claim that you are more of an Ashiq e Rasool (you claim that you love Prophet more than Sahaba)? 🤷‍♂️

People say that it is mentioned in Quran, Allah ordered us to rejoice, 😲

Say, “Upon Allah’s munificence and upon His mercy – upon these should the people rejoice”; that is better than all their wealth and possessions.

They say that Allah is saying to rejoice on the gifts and munificence, and the greatest blessing is the arrival of Prophet. One would say okay, but let's first see the context of this verse

O mankind! The advice has come to you from your Lord and a cure for the hearts – and guidance and mercy for believers.

Surah Yunus 10:57

This verse is regarding the Quran that rejoice that Quran was sent to you and if you connect it with the Hadith mentioned above of Sahih Muslim 2750/1162e. Messenger of Allah used to celebrate it by fasting. If you are adopting another way, then it means you claim that you are smarter than the Prophet of Allah Naozobillah.

O People who Believe! Do not advance ahead of Allah and His Noble Messenger, and fear Allah; indeed Allah is All Hearing, All Knowing.

Some people say that Moawiya R.A also celebrated Milad and as a proof they quote this hadith.
Abu Sa'id Khudri reported that Mu'awiya went to a circle in the mosque and said:

What makes you sit here? They said: We are sitting here in order to remember Allah. He said: I adjure you by Allah (to tell me whether you are sitting here for this very purpose)? They said: By Allah, we are sitting here for this very purpose. Thereupon, he said: I have not demanded you to take an oath, because of any allegation against you and none of my rank in the eye of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) is the narrator of so few ahadith as I am. The fact is that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out to the circle of his Companions and said: What makes you sit? They said: We are sitting here in order to remember Allah and to praise Him for He guided us to the path of Islam and He conferred favours upon us. Thereupon he adjured by Allah and asked if that only was the purpose of their sitting there. They said: By Allah, we are not sitting here but for this very purpose, whereupon he (the Messenger) said: I am not asking you to take an oath because of any allegation against you but for the fact that Gabriel came to me and he informed me that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, was talking to the angels about your magnificence.

From this Hadith they say that Milad should be celebrated 🤷‍♂️. I don't know how they come to this conclusion from this Hadith.

The thing is, Molvi would mend the deen in any way he likes to earn money, the majalis that they do are those free of cost, fee sabeel illah 🤣, they charge huge amounts for it. The naat khawans their level of ishq is measured by the amount paid to them if no money is paid they won't recite naat or nasheed.

Lighting

Some people do lighting around the house. I say it's up to you whether you do it or not, but you should not make it a part of faith and those who don't do lighting you start saying that you don't love your Prophet. As a proof they quote this hadith
Arbaad bin Saariyyah narrates from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said:
“I have been inscribed with the Seal of the Prophets by Allah since the time when Adam (as) was lying in the form of clay. were, and I tell you now about my matter (i.e. prophethood), I am the prayer of Abraham, the good news of Jesus and the dream of my mother that she saw near my birth that a light for her. Appeared, which illuminated the palaces of Syria in front of them.
From this statement "which illuminated the palaces of Syria in front of them" they say lighting is valid 🤦‍♂️. This was a prophecy for Amna S.A that through your child, Muhammad ﷺ, Rome will fall, and it will be illuminated by the light of Islam. For argument's sake let's agree that this indicates that lighting should be done, then why didn't Sahaba and Prophet do it, they could light candles (diay) but they didn't. They understood the Hadith better than us.

Giving food

Some people say that Prophet ﷺ gave food on his birthday (langar/daigh) and for this they quote these hadith partially.

Majma uz zawaid 6203, Aqeeqah
Majma zawaid 6203, Aqeeqah
Moajam Awsat 994, Aqeeqah
Moajam Awsat 994, Aqeeqah

In this Hadith, it is stated that Prophet
did his Aqeeqah, it is not mentioned that he celebrated his birthday every year and gave food every year.

Date of Death?

To nullify the celebration of Milad, Ahl ul Hadith started saying that 12th Rabi ul Awwal is the date of demise of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. I would like to ask them, do you have any proof for this statement from Ahadith, as you guys claim to follow Ahadith strictly? 🧐

I can prove that the date of death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not 12th of Rabi ul Awwal using one scholar's research.

It's a math equation, first let's look at this hadith.
Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab:

Once a Jew said to me, "O the chief of believers! There is a verse in your Holy Book Which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed as a day of celebration." 'Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, "Which is that verse?" The Jew replied, "This day I have perfected your religion For you, completed My favor upon you, And have chosen for you Islam as your religion." (5:3) 'Umar replied,"No doubt, we know when and where this verse was revealed to the Prophet. It was Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was standing at 'Arafat (i.e. the Day of Hajj)"

According to this Hadith, last Hajj tul Wida's Youm e Arfa, 9th of Dhul Hijja was on Friday
Narrated Az-Zuhri:

Anas bin Malik Al-Ansari, told me, "Abu Bakr used to lead the people in prayer during the fatal illness of the Prophet (ﷺ) till it was Monday. When the people aligned (in rows) for the prayer the Prophet (ﷺ) lifted the curtain of his house and started looking at us and was standing at that time. His face was (glittering) like a page of the Qur'an and he smiled cheerfully. We were about to be put to trial for the pleasure of seeing the Prophet, Abu Bakr retreated to join the row as he thought that the Prophet (ﷺ) would lead the prayer. The Prophet (ﷺ) beckoned us to complete the prayer and he let the curtain fall. On the same day he died."

According to this Hadith, Prophet ﷺ died on Monday and if it's in Rabi ul Awwal you can calculate it mathematically.

9th of Dhul Hijja was on Friday and Prophet ﷺ died on Monday. Dhul Hijja, Moharram, Saffar and Rabi ul Awwal. If we keep all these 3 month for 30 days or all of 29 days or 2 of 29 days and 1 of 30 days, 12th of Rabi ul Awwal never falls on Monday. Let's look at all these 4 cases

  • First Case: If we keep all as 30, then 12th Rabi ul Awwal falls on Sunday

All 30 days, date of death
All 30 days, 12th Rabi ul Awwal on Sunday

  • Second Case: If we keep first two as 30 days and last as 29 days, 12th Rabi ul Awwal falls on Saturday
First 2 as 30 days, last as 29, 12th Rabi ul Awwal on Saturday
First 2 as 30 days, last as 29, 12th Rabi ul Awwal on Saturday

  • Third Case: If we keep first as 30 days and last two as 29 days, 12th Rabi ul Awwal falls on Friday
first as 30 days and last two as 29 days, 12th Rabi ul Awwal falls on Friday
First as 30 days and last two as 29 days, 12th Rabi ul Awwal falls on Friday

  • Fourth Case:  All as 29 days, 12th of Rabi ul Awwal falls on Thursday
All as 29 days, 12th of Rabi ul Awwal falls on Thursday
All as 29 days, 12th of Rabi ul Awwal falls on Thursday

In all these scenarios, 12th of Rabi ul Awwal never falls on Monday.

In the end, I would just say that according to books the whole ummah agrees that 12th of Rabi ul Awwal is the date of birth of Prophet . The only issue is with celebrating in such a way that neither the Prophet did nor his Companions and making it a part of faith.

Narrated Aisha:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "If somebody innovates something which is not in harmony with the principles of our religion, that thing is rejected."

Prophet S.A.W said:

....The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire.'....

Nasai 1578

I would like to highlight one blunder which Imam ibn Taimiyah made (who Ahl ul Hadith quote as their Imam), he wrote in his book and legalized every single bidaat.  He said that

although celebrating Milad is a bida'at but if someone's intention is pure he will get a reward for it 🤯🤦‍♂️

Iqtida Sirat e Mustaqeem, Imam ibn Taimiyah

Book: Fikr o aqeeda ki gumrahiyan aur sirat e mustaqeem kay taqazay

Last argument that people give, is everyone is doing it, if you look at it Fiqah Hanafi was established by Abbasid Family as the main religion and if that's the criteria than most of the people of earth follow Christianity then according to that rule you should follow Christianity. Ijma is something different and if there is ijma it means everyone follows it not only brailvi or deobandi or Ahle Hadith or Shia but all of them for example return of Isa A.S it's evidence is found in Quran and Hadith and there is Ijma on it. Allah says

If you follow the majority of people on the earth, they will lead you astray from the path of God, for they follow only conjecture and surmise.

And do not pursue the matter you do not have the knowledge of; indeed the ear, and the eye, and the heart – each of these will be questioned.

Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You Tirmidhi 3433

O Allah! Enable us to see the Truth as Truth and give us the ability to follow it. And show us the falsehood as false and give us the ability to refrain from it. Ameen
