Praise be to Allah, we seek His help. Whomsoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah (alone with no partners) and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. To proceed
(this is how Prophet SAW used to start his speech Nisai 3278Nisai 1578)

My Lord, open up my heart [with assurance] And ease for me my task And untie the knot from my tongue That they may understand my speech.[20:25-28] Ameen

In this article I will try to summarize in light of Sahih Ahadith the correct way in which the Prophet S.A.W taught us to pray. If you want to read about the importance of Salah you can read this article.
Now one may say that Salah can be prayed in any method, I may disagree with it based on this Hadith.

Narrated Malik:

We came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and stayed with him for twenty days and nights. We were all young and of about the same age. The Prophet (ﷺ) was very kind and merciful. When he realized our longing for our families, he asked about our homes and the people there and we told him. Then he asked us to go back to our families and stay with them and teach them (the religion) and to order them to do good things. He also mentioned some other things which I have (remembered or [??] ) forgotten. The Prophet (ﷺ) then added, "Pray as you have seen me praying and when it is the time for the prayer one of you should pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer.

An important point to mention here.

Narrated Abu Hurairah:

A man was praying with his lower garment hanging down. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: Go and perform ablution. He then went and performed ablution. He then came and he said: Go and perform ablution. Then a man said to him: Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with you that you commanded him to perform ablution and then you kept silence? He replied: He was praying while hanging down his lower garments, and Allah does not accept the prayer of a man who hangs down his lower garment.

Musnad Ahmad 1929 (SAHIH)

Niyaah/ Intention

First thing is Niyaah/Intention as the word suggests it's something inside your heart no need to pronounce it out loud or in any specific words. There is no Sahih Hadith which states the wording of Niyaah which we have today but the most important part is that before starting the Salah the person should be well aware of which Salah he is praying and how many Rakahs.

Takbeer

Start of Salah is with Takbir and Rafa Yadain (raising hands),

Narrated Abu Bakr bin `Abdur Rahman Ibn Harith bin Hisham and Abu Salama bin `Abdur Rahman:

Abu Huraira used to say Takbir in all the prayers, compulsory and optional -- in the month of Ramadan or other months. He used to say Takbir on standing for prayer and on bowing; then he would say, "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah," and before prostrating he would say "Rabbana wa laka lhamd." Then he would say Takbir on prostrating and on raising his head from the prostration, then another Takbir on prostrating (for the second time), and on raising his head from the prostration. He also would say the Takbir on standing from the second rak`a. He used to do the same in every rak`a till he completed the prayer. On completion of the prayer, he would say, "By Him in Whose Hands my soul is! No doubt my prayer is closer to that of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) than yours, and this was His prayer till he left this world."

Now one may say that Rafa Yadain is not mentioned in this hadith even the first one, that is because the chapter in which this hadith is taken is "Chapter: One should say Takbir while going in prostration."

The governors of Banu Umayyah used to say Takbir only while starting the Salah and they left the Sunnah of Prophet. You can read the details in Bukhari 784 - 789Muslim 867/392, 873/393

A Tabii was astonished when he saw a person (Abu Huraira ؓ ) say Takbir whenever he bowed, prostrated and got up from it and he complained this to Ibn Abbas ؓ .

Narrated `Ikrima:

I saw a person praying at Muqam-Ibrahim (the place of Abraham by the Ka`ba) and he was saying Takbir on every bowing, rising, standing and sitting. I asked Ibn `Abbas (about this prayer). He admonished me saying: "Isn't that the prayer of the Prophet?"

Rafa Yadain

Rafa Yadain, position of hands (Engineer M. Ali Mirza)Rafa Yadain, position of hands (Asim Hakeem)

Narrated Abu Qilaba:

I saw Malik bin Huwairith saying Takbir and raising both his hands (on starting the prayers and raising his hands on bowing and also on raising his head after bowing. Malik bin Huwairith said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did the same."

Hands should be raised till shoulders and aligned with ears (palms should be aligned with shoulders Bukhari 735 Muslim 861/390 and finger of hands aligned with ears not touching them Muslim 865/391 Nasai 879)
Narrated Salim bin `Abdullah (grandson of Omar  ؓ ):

My father said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the prayer; and on saying the Takbir for bowing. And on raising his head from bowing he used to do the same and then say "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka l-hamd." And he did not do that (i.e. raising his hands) in prostrations.

I have written a sperate article on this topic. If you want to read the details go here. In short, the Hadith of Abdullah bin Masood ؓ regarding doing Rafa Yadain only at beginning, Tirmidhi 257is daif according to Imam Tirmidhi and he quoted many Sahaba, Tabieen and a Fatwa of Abdullah bin Mubarak (student of Imam Abu Haneefa) as well at Jami Tirmidhi 256, (you won't find it on Sunnah.com try Islam 360) even Imam Abu Dawud said that this hadith is not correct in it's wording Abu Dawud 748

Position of Hands in Qiyam

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d:

The people were ordered to place the right hand on the left forearm in the prayer. Abu Hazim said, "I knew that the order was from the Prophet (ﷺ) ."

Bukhari 740

Muslim 896/401

Wa'il bin Hujr said:

"I said: 'I am going to watch how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prays.' So I watched him and he stood and said the takbir, and raised his hands until they were in the level with his ears, then he placed his right hand over his left hand, wrist and lower forearm. When he wanted to bow he raised his hands likewise. Then he prostrated and placed his hands in level with his ears. Then he sat up and placed his left leg under him; he put his left hand on his left thigh and knee, and he put the edge of his right elbow on his right thigh, then he held two of his fingers together and made a circle, and raised his forefinger, and I saw him moving it and supplicating with it."

Sunan Nasai 889 (SAHIH)

Position of hand in Qiyam, definition of Kaf, Ruskh and Saeed

In Arabic the words used are Kaf (كَفِّهِ) ruskh (وَالرُّسْغِ) and Saaed (وَالسَّاعِدِ), so if you look into dictionary Kaf means palm, ruskh means wrist and Saaed means forearm (from elbow to wrist) and Ziraa (ذِرَاعِهِ) means whole arm (from elbow to fingers).

Position of hand in Qiyam, Engineer M.Ali Mirza

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that:

The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade praying with one's hands on one's waist.

Sunan Nasai 890 (SAHIH)

One other thing, one can also pray while placing his hands on side and not folding them. This is a sunnah of Abdullah bin Zubair  ؓ  in Musanaf ibn abi Shaibah 3971/3950 and in-directly by the hadith in which 10 Sahaba approves 11th Sahabi's prayer in Abu Dawud 730

Qiraat

Sanaa

Most common sanaa which is recited is
[Glory to Thee,0 Allah, and Thine is the Praise, and Blessed is Thy Name. and Exalted is Thy Majesty. and there is no other object of worship beside Thee]

There are other wordings for Sanaa as well Bukhari 744 Muslim 1354/598, one other like this

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Umar that:
A man stood behind the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) and said:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيرًا وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلاً

"Allahu Akbaru kabira wal-hamdu Lillahi kathira, wa subhan-Allahi bukratan was asila (Allah is Most Great and much praise be to Allah and glorified be Allah at the beginning and end of the day)." The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Who spoke these words?" A man said: "I did, O Prophet of Allah (SWT)." He said: "Twelve angels rushed (to take them up)."

Bismillah and Aaudubillah

Anas reported:

I observed prayer along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and with Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with all of them), but I never heard any one of them reciting Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim loudly.

Prophet S.A.W used to recite this after Sanaa
["I seek refuge in Allah, All-Hearing and All-Knowing from the accursed devil, from his evil suggestion (hamz), from his puffing up (nafkh), and from his spitting (nafth)]

One can also recite

Fatiha and Surah

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The Prophet, Abu Bakr and `Umar used to start the prayer with "Al hamdu li l-lahi Rabbi l-`alamin (All praise is but to Allah, Lord of the Worlds).

Now the question is should a person recite it when he is praying behind an Imam

Ubadah bin As-Samit narrated:

"Allah's Messenger prayed the Subh prayer, and he had difficulty with the recitation. When turned (after finishing) he said: 'I think that you are reciting behind your Imam?'" He said: "We said: 'Yes, Messenger of Allah, by Allah!' He said: 'Do not do that, except for Umm Al-Kitab, for there is no Salat for one who does not recite it.'"

Tirmidhi 311

Bukhari 756

Muslim 874/394

Surah Fatiha is a conversation between man and Allah. Allah replies after each verse.

Abu Huraira reported:

The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said: If anyone observes prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-Qur'an, It is deficient [he said this three times] and not complete. It was said to Abu Huraira: At times we are behind the Imam. He said: Recite it inwardly, for he had heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) declare that Allah the Exalted had said: I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks.

When the servant says:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ‎﴿﴾

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah the Most High says: My servant has praised Me. And when he (the servant) says:

الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ‎﴿﴾

The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Most High says: My servant has lauded Me. And when he (the servant) says:

مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ‎﴿﴾

Master of the Day of judg- ment, He remarks: My servant has glorified Me. and sometimes He would say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. And when he (the worshipper) says:

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ‎﴿﴾‏

Thee do we worship and of Thee do we ask help, He (Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Then, when he (the worshipper) says:

اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ‎﴿﴾‏ صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ ‎﴿﴾

Guide us to the straight path, the path of those to whom Thou hast been Gracious not of those who have incurred Thy displeasure, nor of those who have gone astray, He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Sufyan said: 'Ala b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. Ya'qub narrated it to me when I went to him and he was confined to his home on account of illness, and I asked him about it.

Muslim 878/395

After reciting Fatiha, one should say Ameen in such a way that others around him can hear but not that loud that the whole masjid can hear it.

Narrated Wa'il ibn Hujr:

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited the verse "Nor of those who go astray" (Surah al-Fatihah, verse 7), he would say Amin; and raised his voice (while uttering this word).

Abu Dawud 932 (SAHIH) Nasai 879 (SAHIH)

The fazeelat of this is enormous

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Say Amin" when the Imam says it and if the Amin of any one of you coincides with that of the angels then all his past sins will be forgiven." Ibn Shihab said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to Say "Amin."

Bukhari 780, 781782

After surah fatiha one has to recite few verses from any surah.

Narrated `Abdullah bin Abi Qatada:

My father said, "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite Al-Fatiha along with another Sura in the first two rak`at of the Zuhr and the `Asr prayers and at times a verse or so was audible to us."

Bukhari 762

One can also recite surahs in 3rd and 4th rakah, it is permissible to do so as

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported:

We used to estimate how long Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) stood in the noon and afternoon prayers, and we estimated hat he stood in the first two rak'ahs of the noon prayer as long as it takes to recite Alif Lam Mim, Tanzil, i. e. as-Sajda. We estimated that he stood half that time in the last two rak'ahs; that he stood in the first two of the afternoon as long as he did in the last two at noon; and in the last two of the afternoon prayer about half that time. Abu Bakr in his narration has made no mention of Alif Lam Mim, Tanzil, but said: As long as it takes to recite thirty verses.

Muslim 1014/452

 Two pauses in Qiyam

Samurah said:

“I memorized two pauses in the prayer, a pause before reciting and a pause when bowing. ‘Imran bin Husain denied that, so they wrote to Al-Madinah, to Ubayy bin Ka’b, and he said that Samurah was speaking the truth.”

Sunan ibn Majah 845 (SAHIH)

Rukuh or Bowing

....I remember the prayer of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) better than any one of you. I saw him raising both his hands up to the level of the shoulders on saying the Takbir; and on bowing he placed his hands on both knees and bent his back straight,....

Bukhari 828

.....He then bowed and placed his hands upon his knees as if he caught hold of them; and bent them, keeping (his arms) away from his side....

‘Uqbah bin ‘Amir Al-Juhani said:

“When the following was revealed: ‘So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most Great’,[69:52] the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to us: ‘Say this in your Ruku’.’ And when the following was revealed: ‘Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High.’[87:1] the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to us: ‘Say this in your prostrations.’”

Ibn Majah 887 (SAHIH)

Narrated `Aisha:

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say frequently in his bowing and prostrations

"Subhanaka l-lahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahumma ghfir li" (Exalted [from unbecoming attributes] Are you O Allah our Lord, and by Your praise [do I exalt you]. O Allah! Forgive me). In this way [??] he was acting on what was explained to him in the Holy Qur'an.

Bukhari 817

‘Aishah said that the prophet (ﷺ) used to say when bowing and prostrating, “All-Glorious, All-Holy, Lord of the angels and spirit.

Abu Dawud 872

Ibn ‘Abbas said:

The Prophet(ﷺ) lifted the curtain (and saw that) the people were standing in rows(of prayers) behind Abu Bakr. He said: O people, there remained nothing that gives good tidings from prophethood except a true dream which a Muslim has himself or which another Muslim has for him. I have been prohibited to recite the Qur’an while bowing or prostration. As regards bowing, exalt the Lord in it, and as to prostration, make supplication with exertion in it, that is worthy of being accepted

Abu Dawud 876

Qooma or standing up from Ruku

It was narrated that ‘Ali bin Abu Talib said:

“When the Prophet (ﷺ) stood up to offer a prescribed prayer, he said Allahu Akbar and raised his hands until they were parallel to his shoulders. When he wanted to bow he did likewise; when he raised his head from bowing he did likewise; and when he stood up after the two prostrations he did likewise.”

Ibn Majah 864

Narrated Salim bin `Abdullah:

My father said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the prayer; and on saying the Takbir for bowing. And on raising his head from bowing he used to do the same and then say "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka l-hamd." And he did not do that (i.e. raising his hands) in prostrations.

Bukhari 735

Narrated Rifa`a bin Rafi` Az-Zuraqi:

One day we were praying behind the Prophet. When he raised his head from bowing, he said, "Sami`a l-lahu liman hamidah." A man behind him said, "Rabbana wa laka l-hamdu, hamdan kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi" (O our Lord! All the praises are for You, many good and blessed praises). When the Prophet completed the prayer, he asked, "Who has said these words?" The man replied, "I." The Prophet said, "I saw over thirty angels competing to write it first." Prophet rose (from bowing) and stood straight till all the vertebrae of his spinal column came to a natural position.

Bukhari 799

Prostration or Sajda

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying:

when one of you prostrates himself he must not kneel in the manner of camel, but should put down his hands before his knees.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I have been ordered to prostrate on seven bones i.e. on the forehead along with the tip of the nose and the Prophet (ﷺ) pointed towards his nose, both hands, both knees and the toes of both feet and not to gather the clothes or the hair."

Bukhari 812

Sajda, Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Be straight in the prostrations and none of you should put his forearms on the ground (in the prostration) like a dog."

Bukhari 822

Prostrating like dog forbidden, Asim Al Hakeem

It was narrated that Hudhaifah said:

"I prayed with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he bowed and said when bowing: 'Subhana Rabbial-azim (Glory be to my Lord Almighty).' And when prostrating: 'Subhana Rabbial-'Ala (Glory be to my Lord Most High).'"

Sunan Nasai 1046

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said:

....'Verily, I have been forbidden from reciting the Qur'an when bowing or prostrating. As for bowing, glorify the Lord therein, and as for prostration, strive hard in supplication for it is more deserving of a response.'"

Sunan Nasai 1045

In Mustadrak Al Hakim Hadith 832, it is mentioned that when in sujood, your feet should be joined together and fingers facing the qiblah as in the image below

Feet in Sajda, Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza

Jalsa

It was narrated from Hudhaifah

Prophet (ﷺ) used to say between the two prostrations:
“Rabbighfir li, Rabbighfir li (O Lord forgive me, O Lord forgive me).”

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abdullah:

I saw `Abdullah bin `Umar crossing his legs while sitting in the prayer and I, a mere youngster in those days, did the same. Ibn `Umar forbade me to do so, and said, "The proper way is to keep the right foot propped up and bend the left in the prayer." I said questioningly, "But you are doing so (crossing the legs)." He said, "My feet cannot bear my weight."

When getting up for second Rakah, one should first sit then standup this is known as Jalsa istarahat and one should get up by getting a support of his hands

Narrated Malik bin Huwairith Al-Laithi:

I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) praying and in the odd rak`at, he used to sit for a moment before getting up.

Narrated Aiyub:

Abu Qilaba said, "Malik bin Huwairith came to us and led us in the prayer in this mosque of ours and said, 'I lead you in prayer but I do not want to offer the prayer but just to show you how Allah's Apostle performed his prayers." I asked Abu Qilaba, "How was the prayer of Malik bin Huwairith?" He replied, "Like the prayer of this Sheikh of ours-- i.e. `Amr bin Salima." That Sheikh used to pronounce the Takbir perfectly and when he raised his head from the second prostration he would sit for a while and then support himself on the ground and get up.

Tashahud

'Amr bin 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair narrated that:

His father said: "When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sat in the second or fourth rak'ah, he would place his handson his knees and point with his finger."

It was narrated that Wa’il bin Hujr said:

“I saw the Prophet (ﷺ) making a circle with his thumb and middle finger, and raising the one next to it (the index finger), supplicating with it during the Tashah-hud.”

Ibn Majah 912

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that:

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sat during the prayer, he put his hands on his knees and raised the finger that is next to the thumb, and supplicates with it, and his left hand was on his knee laid on it.

Nasai 1269

Narrated Muhammad bin `Amr bin `Ata':

.....On sitting In the second rak`a he sat on his left foot and propped up the right one; and in the last rak`a he pushed his left foot forward and kept the other foot propped up and sat over the buttocks."

Bukhari 828

Nafi' says:

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to sit in prayer, he would place his hands on his knees, point with his finger and direct his gaze behind it, then he would say that the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said. : Undoubtedly, this finger is harder than iron on Satan.

Musnad Ahmad 1791/2000

Some people raise their finger when they start reciting shadah but this amal is not found in any sahih hadith. The finger should be raised through out and once after durood one starts supplicating then he should start moving it.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said:

"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught us to say when we sat following two rak'ahs:

(Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).'"

Nasai 1162

Then after this recite durood and after that a dua, any dua he wants and as many as he wants.

Abu Huraira reported:

The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) said: When any one of you utters tashahhud (in prayer) he must seek refuge with Allah from four (trials) and should thus say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

" O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trial of life and death and from the evil of the trial of Masih al-Dajjal" (Antichrist).

Muslim 1324/588

Narrated Anas:

The most frequent invocation of The Prophet (ﷺ) was:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

"O Allah! Give to us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire." (2.201)

Bukhari 6389

One thing to keep in mind is that, one can read durood and dua even if he is in his 2nd rakah and wants to pray 4 rakah prayer.

It was narrated from Sa'd bin Hisham that Aishah said:

"We used to prepare siwak and water for wudu for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Allah (SWT) would wake him when He willed to wake him at night, then he would clean his teeth and make wudu, and pray nine rak'ahs, not sitting until the eighth, when he would praise Allah (SWT) and send blessings upon His Prophet and supplicate between them, but he did not say the taslim. Then he prayed the ninth and sat, and said something similar, praising Allah (SWT) and sending blessings upon His Prophet (ﷺ), then he said a taslim that we could hear, then he prayed two rak'ahs sitting down."

Nasai 1720

Then end the Salah with Taslim/Salam

Abdullah narrated:

"The Prophet would say the Salam from his right and from his left (saying): (As-Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, as-Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah) 'Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy.'"

Tirmidhi 295

Bukhari 838

Narrated Zaid bin Wahb:

Hudhaifa saw a person who was not performing the bowing and prostration perfectly. He said to him, "You have not prayed and if you should die you would die on a religion other than that of Muhammad."

Bukhari 791

That is complete Namaz e Muhammadi S.A.W. Now I would discuss few things regarding Namaz e witr and Janazah.

Funeral Prayer

Funeral prayer consists of 4 takbirs in state of Qiyam. It can be prayed loudly and in silence as well.

It was narrated that Abu Umamah said:

"The Sunnah, when offering the funeral prayer, is to recite Umm Al-Qur'an (the Exxence of the Qur'an) quietly in the first Takbir, Then to say three (more) Takbir and to say the Taslim after the last one."

After 1st Takbir Surah Fatiha

Narrated Talha bin `Abdullah bin `Auf:

I offered the funeral prayer behind Ibn `Abbas and he recited Al-Fatiha and said, "You should know that it (i.e. recitation of Al-Fatiha) is the tradition of the Prophet (ﷺ) Muhammad.

Umm Sharik Al-Ansari said:

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to recite the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatihah) in the funeral prayer.”

Ibn Majah 1496

After 2nd Takbir Durood and after 3rd Takbir dua for the deceased and then after 4th Takbir Salam only on one side Musanaf ibn abi Shaybah 11611. The Prophet sometimes used to recite 5 takbirs Muslim 2216/ 957

Witr Prayer

Now let's first talk about the number of rakahs of witr prayer, as witr in arabic means odd, so.

Sufyan narrated from Az-Zuhri, from 'Ata bin Yazid, from Abu Ayyub, who said:

"Whoever wants to pray witr with seven (rak'ahs) let him do so, and whoever wants to pray witr with five (rak'ahs) let him do so, and whoever wants to pray witr with three rak'ahs, let him do so; and whoever wants to pray witr with one rak'ah, let him do so, and wants to do so gesturing, let him do so.'"

Nasai 1714, 1713, 1712

Prophet S.A.W has also prayed 9 rakahs witr in one go with one salam as mentioned in the hadith Nasai 1720.

It was narrated that Ali, may Allah (SWT) be pleased with him, said:

"Witr is not essential like the obligatory prayers, but it is the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)."

Nasai 1676

When praying 3 rakah witr, one should not sit in Tashahud after 2nd rakah but he should directly get up for 3rd rakah.

Abu Huraira narrated:

Messenger of Allah said: don't pray three rakah witr and don't pray similar to Maghrib prayer, rather pray five or seven rakah

Mustadrak Hakim 1137, 1138

Umm ul momineen Ayesha said:

Messenger of Allah after praying two rakahs of witr didn't say taslim.

Hakim 1139

Ata narrated:

Messenger of Allah used to pray three rakah witr and he never sat in between them and used to say tashud in last rakah.

Hakim 1142, 1141, 1140

Secondly dua e qunoot,

Narrated Al-Hasan ibn Ali:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me some words that I say during the witr. (The version of Ibn Jawwas has: I say them in the supplication of the witr.) They were:

"O Allah, guide me among those Thou hast guided, grant me security among those Thou hast granted security, take me into Thy charge among those Thou hast taken into Thy charge, bless me in what Thou hast given, guard me from the evil of what Thou hast decreed, for Thou dost decree, and nothing is decreed for Thee. He whom Thou befriendest is not humbled. Blessed and Exalted art Thou, our Lord."

Abu Dawud 1425

The other one which normally people recites is qunoot e nazla Sunan Kubra Al Bayhaqi 3143. Secondly, it should be prayed before bowing, before going into ruku. Before reciting qunoot if one says takbir then he has to do Rafa yadain and then recite qunoot if he does not say takbir then he can directly say qunoot Musanaf ibn abi Shaybah 7021

Narrated `Asim:

I asked Anas bin Malik about the Qunut. Anas replied, "Definitely it was (recited)". I asked, "Before bowing or after it?" Anas replied, "Before bowing." I added, "So and so has told me that you had informed him that it had been after bowing." Anas said, "He told an untruth (i.e. "was mistaken," according to the Hijazi dialect). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) recited Qunut after bowing for a period of one month." Anas added, "The Prophet (ﷺ) sent about seventy men (who knew the Qur'an by heart) towards the pagans (of Najd) who were less than they in number and there was a peace treaty between them and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (but the Pagans broke the treaty and killed the seventy men). So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) recited Qunut for a period of one month asking Allah to punish them."

Bukhari 1002

 That's pretty much it.

Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek You forgiveness, and I repent to You Tirmidhi 3433

O Allah! Enable us to see the Truth as Truth and give us the ability to follow it. And show us the falsehood as false and give us the ability to refrain from it. Ameen
