Eid according to Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم or Banu Umayyah

Eid Mistakes, Eid Mubarak 2021, Eid Corona
Eid according to Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم or Banu Umayyah

Praise be to Allah, we seek His help. Whomsoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. The truest of word is the Book of Allah and best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those that are newly invented; every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah (alone with no partners) and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. To proceed
(this is how Prophet SAW used to start his speech Nisai 3278Nisai 1578)

My Lord, open up my heart [with assurance] And ease for me my task And untie the knot from my tongue That they may understand my speech.[20:25-28] Ameen

 اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad (Nasai 1292)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today InShaaAllah I will be talking on the mistakes normally made in Eid prayer and the sermon.

Mainly two major mistakes.

1) Description of Eid Prayer

There are total of 12 extra takbirs in both the Eid prayers, 7 takbirs in the first rakah before the recitation and 5 takbirs in second rakah before the recitation

Yahya related to me from Malik that Nafi, the mawla of Abdullah ibn Umar said, "I was at Adha and Fitr with Abu Hurayra and he said 'Allah is greater'(Takbir) seven times in the first raka, before the recitation, and five times in the second, before the recitation."

In subcontinent in most of the masajids, they do 6 extra takbirs instead of 12, 3 in the first rakah before recitation and 3 in second rakah before ruku. I was unable to find any authentic source on this, so in short this is not the sunnah of Prophet SAW.

If any one of the readers have authentic Hadith which says that there are only six extra takbirs in Eid prayer, please do mention in the comments or email me and just the Hadith don't send me a lecture of some Alim or Mufti JazakAllah Khair.

2) Sermon before Eid Prayer

The sermon/Khutbah/Waaz/Bayan/Dars o Naseehat (by whatever name you call it) [Khutbah is a lecture which is given to the people in their local language, at the time of Prophet it was in Arabic, so in Pak it shouldn't be in Arabic it should be in Urdu] given on the Eid Day is after Eid Prayer not before it. It is against the Sunnah of Prophet S.A.W

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

I offered the `Id prayer with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), Abu Bakr, `Umar and `Uthman and all of them offered the prayer before delivering the Khutba.

[Sahih al-Bukhari 962]

So, the question arises that when and who started this tradition of giving the sermon/khutbah/waaz before the Eid prayer?

It was Banu Umayyah this is the sunnah of Marwan bin hakam, a little introduction of this man,
It is not the sunnah of Prophet SAW. So, after the death of Hazrat Ali RA & AS during the reign of Muawiya RA, they used to curse and insult Maula Ali AS in the friday & eid sermons Sahih Muslim 6229/2409. As the sermon of Friday prayer is compulsory so the people were bound to listen to what they said but the sermon of Eid prayer is not compulsory one can leave and that's what the people used to do instead of hearing the curse and insult, they would prefer to just leave.

It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Sa’ib said:
“I attended the ‘Eid prayer with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He led us in offering the ‘Eid prayer, then he said: ‘I have finished the prayer. Whoever wants to sit (and listen to) the sermon, then let him sit, and whoever wants to leave, then let him leave.’”
So, then Marwan started giving sermons before the Eid prayer.
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that the Messenger of Allah ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) used to go out on the day of Adha and on the day of Fitr and commenced the prayer. And after having observed his prayer and pronounced the salutation, he stood up facing people as they were seated at their places of worship. And if he intended to send out an army he made mention of it to the people, and if he intended any other thing besides it, he commanded them (to do that). He used to say (to the people):
Give alms, give alms, give alms, and the majority that gave alms was of women. He then returned and this (practice) remained (in vogue) till Marwan b. al- Hakam (came into power). I went out hand in hand with Marwan till we came to the place of worship and there Kathir b. Salt had built a pulpit of clay and brick. Marwan began to tug me with his hand as though he were pulling me towards the pulpit, while I was pulling him towards the prayer. When I saw him doing that I said: What has happened to the practice of beginning with prayer? He said: No, Abu Sa'id, what you are familiar with has been abandoned (Naozobillah). I thereupon said (three times and went back): By no means, by Him in Whose hand my life is, you are not doing anything better than what I am familiar with.

It is narrated on the authority of Tariq b. Shihab:
It was Marwan who initiated (the practice) of delivering khutbah (address) before the prayer on the 'Id day. A man stood up and said: Prayer should precede khutbah. He (Marwan) remarked, This (practice) has been done away with (Naozobillah). Upon this Abu Sa'id remarked: This man has performed (his duty) laid on him. I heard the Messenger of Allah as saying: He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith
I wish that Umar R.A was alive by then because Marwan saying that the sunnah of Prophet has been done with and no longer applicable, Umar R.A would have raised his sword upon him.

So, this is the sunnah of Banu Umayyah and specifically Marwan bin Hakam. You should ask your Imam masjid, if they give the sermon before Eid prayer, that why do they do this? are you following the Sunnah of Marwan and abandoning the sunnah of Prophet SAW? They probably won't know because they follow their saints and elders🤷

There are various Ahadith which indicates how they use to curse Ali RA & AS. You can read the Ahadith yourself I will share the number of some of the ahadith. Sometimes the one who translated the hadith used a lighter word which is not the meaning of the original Arabic word.

Sahih Muslim 6220/2404 (Muawiya RA ordered Saad bin Abi Waqas AS & RA to curse Maula Ali AS & RA  أَمَرَ مُعَاوِيَةُ)

Sahih Muslim 6229/2409 (ruler from Al e Marwan called Sahal and asked him to curse Maula Ali AS & RA)

Abu Dawud 4650 (Saeed bin Zaid AS & RA (brother in law of Umar AS & RA) came to Mogheerah bin Shoba RA and a third person was cursing Ali AS & RA)

Abu Dawud 4131(Comments of Ameer Muawiya RA on the death of Imam Hassan and reply of Mukdam bin Madi AS & RA )

Mustadrik Al Hakim 6121 (One man was cursing Ali AS & RA in Madina Saad bin Abi Waqas AS & RA prayed to Allah and that rider died miraculously)

My question to my Ahnaaf Brothers, do you want to follow the Sunnah of Prophet S.A.W or Marwaan.

O Allah! Enable us to see the Truth as Truth and give us the ability to follow it. And show us the falsehood as false and give us the ability to refrain from it. Ameen
